How this calculator plots your chart
Plotting a BaZi chart is mechanical — the same almanac arithmetic classical masters did by lookup, done here by the same engine that has been verified against 964 reference charts. Four decisions produce your eight characters:
The year pillar follows the solar year, not January 1st. The BaZi year begins at 立春 (Li Chun, "Start of Spring," around 4 February). Born on 20 January 1990? Your year pillar is still 己巳 — the 1989 pair — because Li Chun hadn't arrived. This is the single most common plotting error in casual charts.
The month pillar follows the jie qi (节气) boundaries. Months in BaZi are solar terms, not calendar months and not lunar months — each begins at a precise astronomical moment (立春, 惊蛰, 清明…), so someone born on the "5th of March" may belong to either of two month pillars depending on the hour. The month branch fixes the season that Stage-2 strength assessment weighs most heavily.
The day pillar is a pure 60-day cycle. Unbroken since antiquity, indifferent to months and years — the sexagenary day count is why your Day Master (the day pillar's stem) can be computed for any date in history. There is one convention to know: the day boundary. This site follows the midnight convention documented in our teaching lineage's materials; the late-night 子 hour (23:00–00:00) is the classical point schools discuss — if you were born in that window, read your result knowing the convention matters.
The hour pillar uses double-hours. Each branch covers two clock hours (子 23:00–01:00, 丑 01:00–03:00 … 亥 21:00–23:00), and the hour stem is derived from the day stem — which is why the calculator asks for your day first and your time second.
What this calculator deliberately doesn't tell you
Your result shows the four pillars, hidden stems and Ten God labels — the complete raw material, honestly plotted. It does not verdict your Day Master's strength, name your useful god, or judge your structure — not because the engine can't approximate them, but because those are weighing judgments where honest schools differ and context decides. A label without the weighing is how beginners get stuck (we wrote about the five walls).
