In the classics
《渊海子平》 sets the derivation: sequence forward or backward from the month pillar by year-stem polarity and gender, one pillar per decade, with the starting age counted from the distance to the nearest jie qi boundary. 《滴天髓》 supplies the judgment doctrine: a luck pillar re-weathers the whole chart's qi.
In a chart
Luck pillars are why identical charts live different decades differently — each decade overlays a new stem-branch pair that supports, drains, clashes or completes what the natal chart holds. Judgment is method, not mood: weigh the pillar's elements against the useful god (a decade delivering what the chart needs is a good decade for that chart), then check its branch against the natal branches for combinations, clashes and frame-completions. The pillar sets the decade's climate; annual pillars supply its weather.
Worked example
A weak 甲 wood chart whose useful god is water enters a 壬子 luck pillar — ten years of exactly the support it lacked. The same pillar arriving in a strong wood chart already flooded with Resource would read the opposite way.
Where beginners misread it
Asking "is this a good luck pillar?" in the abstract. No pillar is good or bad until it is held against a specific chart's needs — the question is always for whom.
