In the classics
Chart-plotting rules — solar (jie qi) month boundaries, the day pillar from the sexagenary day count, hour branches by double-hour — are set out in 《渊海子平》 and are mechanical: classical masters plotted by almanac lookup exactly as software does today.
In a chart
Plotting has right answers; interpretation has judgment. The chart itself is only the input: four stems, four branches, their hidden stems — perhaps twelve to sixteen characters of raw material. Every downstream concept in this glossary (strength, structure, useful god, luck pillars) is a way of organising that raw material, which is why a correctly plotted chart is the non-negotiable first step: one wrong pillar and every later judgment inherits the error.
Worked example
Two birth times forty minutes apart can produce different hour pillars — 08:50 falls in the 辰 double-hour, 09:10 in 巳 — changing one-quarter of the chart. Precision at the plotting step is cheap; correcting for it later is impossible.
