Shén Shà
Named symbolic markers (Nobleman, Peach Blossom, Sky Horse and many more) layered on top of the elemental core. Colourful and memorable, but decoration on the structure — no serious reading starts from them.
In the classics
The star catalogues — Nobleman (天乙贵人), Peach Blossom (桃花), Sky Horse (驿马) and hundreds more — descend from the older astro-calendrical tradition and are collected most fully in 《三命通会》. The Zi Ping reform's whole point was to subordinate them: element-and-god structure first, stars as annotation.
In a chart
Shensha are the system's mnemonics and colour: derived by simple lookups (day stem or year branch against the other pillars), they flag themes — helpful people, magnetism, movement — in one memorable word. Used classically, they annotate a finished elemental reading and occasionally sharpen it; used as a starting point, they produce horoscope-grade output with BaZi vocabulary. A Peach Blossom in a well-structured chart is charm; the same star cannot rescue — or damn — anything on its own.
Worked example
For a 甲 or 戊 or 庚 day stem, 丑 and 未 are the classical Nobleman branches: holding one flags helpful-people luck. Note the derivation is a table lookup — thirty seconds of arithmetic, which is precisely why it carries less weight than structure that takes years to judge.
Where beginners misread it
Meeting BaZi through its most marketable stars — "you have Peach Blossom!" — and assuming they are the reading. The classics' own hierarchy puts them last, as decoration on the structure.
