Stage 2 · Term 12 of 34
Companion 比肩
Bǐ Jiān
Same element and same polarity as the Day Master. Themes: independence, peers, self-reliance, standing shoulder-to-shoulder. Constructive when a weak Day Master needs allies; crowding when the chart is already strong.
Also called: Friendly Competitors (Yixin Academy convention)
In the classics
The classics treat Companion as the self mirrored in equals. 《三命通会》's doctrine: when the Day Master is weak, meeting Companion is useful reinforcement; when already strong, further Companion constrains Wealth and Officer and must itself be regulated.
In a chart
Companion is peer energy: siblings, colleagues, allies, personal backbone. Its worth is entirely conditional on strength — the single clearest illustration of BaZi's dose logic. A weak Day Master facing heavy pressure needs Companion the way a lone worker needs teammates; a strong Day Master crowded by more Companion becomes a room of equals competing for one purse (the classical 比劫夺财 pattern, shared with Rob Wealth). Career-wise it favours independent and partnership-of-equals arrangements over steep hierarchies.
Worked example
A 甲 Day Master meeting another 甲 — same element, same polarity — meets Companion. Two pillar trees side by side: mutual shelter in a storm, competition for the same sunlight in a crowded chart.
Where beginners misread it
Reading Companion as automatically "friends and support." In a strong chart it is precisely the star of rivalry and divided gains.
How this plays out in your chart depends on the whole structure — the chart-specific judgment taught in Yixin Academy's structured courses.
