Day Master 日主

The Heavenly Stem of your day pillar — the character that represents you in the chart. Every other character is read through its relationship to the Day Master; it is the reference point of the entire system and the first thing any reader identifies.

In the classics
Reading from the day stem is the Zi Ping revolution: 《渊海子平》 displaced the older year-based method, and every later classic — 《子平真诠》's structures, 《穷通宝鉴》's month-by-month tables — is organised around the Day Master without argument.
In a chart
The Day Master is the fixed reference point: it is never itself "good" or "bad," and it is the one character a reading cannot relativise. Its element and polarity generate the Ten God identities of every other character; its rooting and season decide strength; its needs define the useful god. Two charts containing identical characters but different day stems are entirely different charts.
Worked example
In 己巳 · 丙子 · 丙寅 · 壬辰, the Day Master is 丙 — yang fire, the sun image: radiant, declared, rooted here in 寅 (which hides its own 丙). The 壬 in the hour stem is then its Seven Killings (water controlling fire, same polarity) — that identity exists only relative to 丙.
Where beginners misread it
Treating the Day Master as a personality type ("I'm a 辛 Metal!") and stopping there. It is a reference point, not a horoscope sign; its meaning is completed by the whole chart around it.
