Hidden Stems 藏干
Cáng Gān
Stems concealed inside each Earthly Branch (e.g. 寅 hides 甲, 丙 and 戊). They give branches internal depth — a branch can quietly carry energies its surface doesn't show — and are essential for accurate strength and structure assessment.
In the classics
The hidden-stem tables — which stems each branch conceals, and which is the branch's primary qi (本气) — are recorded in 《渊海子平》 and repeated across the tradition with only minor school variation.
In a chart
Hidden stems are where charts keep their secrets. A chart can "have no wealth" on the surface yet carry wealth stems hidden in two branches — resources the person holds quietly rather than displays. Roots work through hidden stems too: a day master is rooted wherever a branch conceals a stem of its own element, and rooted strength is real strength. Storage branches (辰戌丑未) each hold three stems, which is why clashes that "open the storehouse" matter so much in Stage 3.
Worked example
寅 conceals 甲 (primary), 丙 and 戊. For a 丙 fire Day Master, 寅 is therefore not just "a wood branch feeding fire" — it is also a root, because 丙 itself hides inside it.
Where beginners misread it
Ignoring hidden stems until "advanced" study. Strength assessment — the hinge of Stage 2 — is impossible without them; they are intermediate machinery, not esoterica.
