Indirect Resource 偏印
Piān Yìn
The element that produces your Day Master, same polarity. Themes: intuition, unconventional knowledge, alternative paths — support that arrives sideways rather than through institutions.
Also called: Indirect Seal
In the classics
The tradition names its shadow openly — the Owl (枭神) that snatches Food God is misfortune — and its redemption just as openly: meeting Seven Killings in the 杀印相生 pattern, "calamity is transformed into blessing" (《三命通会》).
In a chart
Indirect Resource is same-polarity nourishment: support that arrives sideways. Intuition, autodidactic learning, niche and unconventional knowledge — including, the classics note with a smile, metaphysics itself. It nourishes like Direct Resource but less sociably: the mentor outside the institution, the insight at 3 a.m., the alternative path that works but can't be explained to relatives. Its cost structure is specific: positioned against Food God it starves the chart's output (the classical 夺食), producing blocked creativity and irregular income; positioned to absorb Seven Killings it becomes the star's finest use.
Worked example
甲 wood meeting 壬 water — producing element, same polarity — meets Indirect Resource: not the rain but the underground spring; the tree it feeds never quite knows from where.
Where beginners misread it
Reading "Owl" superstitiously as an omen. It is a positional pattern — the same star that starves output in one seat transforms pressure into power in another.
The classical rules here are public; the lineage method for applying them to a specific chart is taught, not read — see Yixin Academy's courses.
