Season Command 得令

Dé Lìng

Whether the Day Master's element is in season in the birth month — the single largest factor in strength. Wood born in spring commands the season; wood born in autumn fights the season.

In the classics

《穷通宝鉴》 is an entire classic built on this single factor: each Day Master read through each of the twelve months, warm against cold, wet against dry. 《子平真诠》 starts every structure from the month command (月令) for the same reason: the season is the chart's climate.

In a chart

Season command asks one question — is the Day Master's element in season in the birth month? — and no other single factor moves strength as much. Wood commands spring, fire summer, metal autumn, water winter, earth the four transitional months. An in-season Day Master starts every other calculation with the wind at its back; an out-of-season one must find its support in roots and stems or accept weakness. The month branch's dominance is also why it doubles as the seat of structure (格局): what commands the season tends to command the chart.

Worked example

甲 wood born in 卯 month (mid-spring) commands the season — wood's own month, full qi. The same 甲 born in 酉 month (mid-autumn, metal's command) is off-season and, worse, in its controller's home month.

Where beginners misread it

Stopping at "born in spring = strong." Command is the largest factor, not the verdict; a spring wood chart surrounded by metal and fire can still finish weak.

How this plays out in your chart depends on the whole structure — the chart-specific judgment taught in Yixin Academy's structured courses.
