Useful God 用神
Yòng Shén
The element (or star) a specific chart most needs to move toward balance and function. It is determined by the whole structure — season, strength, structure — never by simply spotting which element is "missing." The core judgment skill of intermediate BaZi.
In the classics
《子平真诠》 ties the useful god to the structure taken from the month command; 《滴天髓》 frames it as whatever restores flow and balance to the chart's qi. Both agree on the discipline: it is determined by the whole configuration, never by simple absence.
In a chart
The useful god is the chart's functional need — the element (or star) that, when present or arriving in luck, makes the whole machine work: supporting the weak Day Master, draining or regulating the strong one, unblocking a stuck flow, or adjusting a frozen or scorched climate. It is the single most consequential judgment in BaZi: the useful god decides which luck pillars are good decades, which annual pillars deserve caution, and what "favourable" even means for that chart. It is also the concept most abused online — usually reduced to "your missing element," which the classics explicitly reject.
Worked example
A strong 甲 wood chart drowning in water Resource doesn't need more support — it likely needs fire (output) to vent and warm, or earth (wealth) to dam the flood. The need, not the shortage, names the useful god.
Where beginners misread it
"I lack metal, so metal is my useful god." Absence is not need; a chart can lack an element it would be actively harmed by receiving.
