Structure 格局

The chart's organising pattern, usually named from the dominant god in the month branch (e.g. 正官格 Officer Structure, 食神格 Food God Structure). Structure tells you what kind of chart you're reading before you judge any detail inside it.
In the classics
《子平真诠》 is the structure classic: take the month command's dominant qi, name the frame after the god it projects (正官格, 食神格, and so on), then judge every other character as supporting or damaging that frame. The eight regular structures plus the special frames (从格, 专旺 and kin) organise the entire classical case literature.
In a chart
Structure is triage: it tells you what kind of chart you are holding before any detail gets weighed. An Officer structure lives or dies by whether the Officer stays pure and carried; a Hurting Officer structure by where its brilliance discharges; a Wealth structure by whether the Day Master can command what it owns. The same character is medicine in one structure and poison in another — which is why beginners who skip structure produce readings that are simultaneously detailed and wrong.
Worked example
A 甲 Day Master born in 酉 month: the month command's primary qi is 辛 — 甲's Direct Officer — so the chart opens as an Officer structure (正官格), and the first question becomes whether that Officer is protected, rooted and unmixed.
Where beginners misread it
Collecting exotic special structures before mastering the regular eight. The classics treat 从格 and kin as boundary cases with strict entry conditions, not as prizes for unusual-looking charts.
